Off the shore of Yashima in the Genryaku era, sunset gilds the waves.
A Heike boat raises a golden fan, and a lone horseman rides into the surf.
I. A Golden Fan Upon the Waves
Toward evening during the battle of Yashima, the rival fleets of Genji and Heike paused across the narrow bay as the wind grew sharp. Out from the Heike fleet glided a single skiff, where a court lady in layered robes fixed a gold-leaf folding fan painted with a crimson sun to the tip of a pole and challenged the archers on shore to strike it down.
Choppy swells rocked the small boat and set the golden fan twisting and dipping in the sea breeze, daring anyone on land to try the impossible shot across the water. In this game the board itself is that folding fan, each bamboo fan rib serving as a reel where symbols line up from left to right across the open paper.
II. The Archer in the Surf
Summoned by his commander Yoshitsune, the young archer Nasu no Yoichi rode his black horse straight into the churning shallows to close the distance toward the boat. With both armies watching in dead silence from ship and shore, he knew that to miss the target would bring lasting shame upon his clan and his name.
Steady in the saddle despite the cold spray splashing against his iron stirrups, Yoichi nocked a bulb-headed whistling arrow to his long bowstring and drew to his ear. Whenever that arrow lands on a rib during play, the entire rib turns wild from top to bottom, linking ways across the fan in a single stroke.
III. Unfolding to Full Width
Landing enough painted target scatters anywhere on the fan launches The Fan Target bonus round. Now bamboo fan ribs appear on the reels during play, and each pair collected unfolds one additional rib on the following spin, widening the fan step by step and multiplying the number of available ways across the board.
Opened ribs remain open for the rest of the feature, and once every rib has unfolded to its widest span, the crimson sun on the gold leaf blazes to life in the auspicious fully open state, boosting the payout of every remaining spin in the round while the golden fan gleams over the bay.
IV. The Arrow at the Rivet
When the final spin concludes, Yoichi closes his eyes in quiet prayer to the gods of his homeland, draws his bow to the ear, and looses the final arrow. Singing over the water, the shaft strikes the fan's pin right at the rivet, sending the golden fan tumbling through the sunset sky into the sea while warriors on both shore and ship roar in applause.
That climactic shot multiplies the entire bonus total one last time, scaling even higher when the fan has opened to its full span across the waves of Yashima. It is the game's theme, not a promise: the shot at Yashima belongs to epic legend, while every spin's outcome is still decided by the RGS random number generator.
