When autumn cools the hills, the chestnut tigers rise from Honshu,
crossing the dark sea current on a long voyage south.
I. Pale Wings in the Autumn Breeze
As the mountain forests of Japan take on the first chill of autumn, clusters of pale purple thoroughwort bloom across the highlands and fill the valleys with a faint sweet scent. Among them wakes the chestnut tiger butterfly, its wings framed in deep umber with a ring of white dots and translucent cells of pale robin's-egg blue that glow like thin porcelain in the morning sun.
It is hard to imagine that wings so delicate hold the ancient instinct to cross more than a thousand kilometres of open water without losing their way across the sea. The moment the northern migration wind stirs through the mountain passes, butterflies lift from the blossoms by the hundreds and glide down the autumn air currents toward the distant southern coast.
II. Island by Island Across the Sea
Their journey is a patient island-hopping voyage down the entire length of the southern archipelago as the season turns cold. Leaving the highlands of Honshu and the sunlit capes of Kyushu behind, the butterflies rest among coastal flowers to gather strength before riding the sea thermals out across the dark Kuroshio current to Amami, Okinawa, and the far Ryukyu islands.
On the reels, a sudden swarm may drift in during any base spin, settling onto separate cells of the middle reels as wilds that link the ways from left to right across the board. Once the Migration feature begins, a swarm arrives on every single spin, and after each stop along the route the flock moves further south in ever greater numbers.
III. A Researcher's Gentle Mark
To trace where these travellers come from and how far they fly across the sea, naturalists wait quietly beside the autumn flowers with soft nets and fine markers. Steadying a butterfly gently between two fingers without harming its scales, they write a tiny code across the pale translucent cell of its wing before releasing the tagged butterfly back into the breeze.
When that same marked wing is sighted weeks later on a distant southern island across the open water, the invisible highway of the autumn wind is finally revealed to human eyes. In the game, tagged butterflies carry wing multipliers that add together on the same reel and multiply across reels, growing larger the further south the journey reaches.
IV. The Ribbon Over the Waves
Beyond Yonaguni lies the warm green coast of Taiwan, the final destination of the long autumn flight across the sea. On rare mornings when wind and tide align over the strait, thousands of chestnut tigers stream together across the water in a single shimmering butterfly band, filling every eligible cell across the middle reels at once with pale blue wings.
That living ribbon of pale blue and chestnut drifting over the dark sea waves is the rarest and brightest sight of the entire voyage south across the islands. It is the game's theme, not a promise: however the butterflies gather and ride the wind on screen, every spin's outcome is still decided by the RGS random number generator.
